Royal Canin: Overpriced Dog Food?

In a previous post we debunked many of the myths that Royal Canin wants consumers to believe about their food.  Our assessment is that Royal Canin is over-priced for what you are actually getting. You can expect to discover that fillers and grains make up the majority of the first 5 ingredients and that chicken-by-product meal is their main source of protein.

Here is a quick look at three of Royal Canin’s product lines:

Maxi Adult (2.5 Stars)

Controversial Ingredients: Chicken-by-Product Meal, Brewer’s Rice, Wheat, Corn Gluten Meal, Wheat Gluten

Cost $1.71/lb (Petco)

Breed Health (2-2.5 Stars)

Labrador Puppy

Chihuahua

Mini

Adult

Controversial Ingredients: Brewer’s Rice, Corn, Corn Gluten Meal, Natural Flavors, Wheat Gluten, 4 of the first 5 ingredients are grains (of which only one is decent)

Cost $2.78/lb

Adult Special
(This is pretty much the same thing except chicken fat is the third ingredient and some of the vitamins have different proportions.)

Controversial Ingredients: Brewer’s Rice, Corn Gluten Meal, Brewer’s Rice Flour, Natural Flavors, Wheat Gluten

Cost $2.94/lb (the only thing special about this food is the price)

Surprisingly, Royal Canin is 2 to 3 times more expensive than pet foods with comparable ingredients like Purina Pro Plan (2 stars, $1.32/lb) or Iams Healthy (2.5 stars, $1.20/lb). We’re not recommending those foods, but it’s worth noting. Royal Canin’s average price is around $2.20/lb, making it two times the cost of Fromm’s Adult Classic (3.5 Stars, as low as $.90/lb from Abracadabra). We could sell Royal Canin, but we choose to sell the brands that make healthful foods and we know that Fromm’s is the better deal. Fromm’s has quality protein (chicken meal, menhaden fish meal), grains (pearled bearly), and no fillers!
